As Durham's regional capital, Whitby hosts the Region's administrative offices on Rossland Road — council chambers, planning staff, the works. A family court isn't among them. Divorce, parenting arrangements, support, and property division for Whitby residents go through the Family Court branch of the Superior Court of Justice, housed at the Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel S. Sharpe Courthouse in Oshawa, which handles that caseload for the whole region under Durham's Unified Family Court structure. From the originating application to a signed final order, we manage the file. Read more about family law in Whitby →
Criminal charges follow the same path out of town. Whoever is arrested in Whitby answers to either the Ontario Court of Justice or the Superior Court of Justice, both convening at the Oshawa courthouse, and nowhere in Whitby proper. What actually moves the needle on a file is how fast counsel gets involved — it shapes release conditions, which Crown ends up assigned, and the tone of every appearance that follows. From bail onward, we're at that Oshawa courthouse for our Whitby clients: disclosure, negotiation, trial if it comes to that. Read more about criminal defence in Whitby →
Here's where Whitby actually is the local courthouse: HTA tickets for the whole region are prosecuted inside that same Regional Headquarters complex on Rossland Road, at the Durham Region Provincial Offences Court — a different office in the building from the one that runs council meetings, and a different court entirely from the Oshawa one above. A ticket you simply pay still costs you in demerit points and a higher premium down the road. Our approach is to pull the disclosure first and talk to the prosecutor before assuming a trial date is even necessary; most Part 1 and Part 3 tickets never require you to show up. It's a natural guess that small claims belongs with traffic tickets at the Rossland Road building, since that's the one genuinely in Whitby — but it doesn't. Civil disputes and Small Claims Court for Whitby residents sit with the Superior Court of Justice back at the Oshawa courthouse. October 2025 brought the claim ceiling up to $50,000, which now covers the bulk of what crosses our desk from Whitby: unpaid invoices, contractor disputes, damaged property, deposits gone missing. We take it from the initial claim through settlement conference and trial if a defendant won't budge. Read more about small claims court for Whitby →

I had such a stressful time trying to find legal help. I felt lost and hopeless when I got a notice to appear at the LTB. When I found Ryan, he stepped up and defended me. He’s knowledgeable about both the LTB and criminal law, and most importantly he’s tough! Exactly what I was looking for. I’m so glad I found him.
