As a rough guide, support often lasts between six months and one year for each year of the relationship; relationships of 20 or more years — or where the years together plus the recipient's age total 65 (the 'rule of 65') — can lead to indefinite (open-ended) support. The guidelines are advisory, and courts keep discretion based on the parties' circumstances.
